Ebony (Doispyros crassiflora) is the prized wood of
ancient Egypt, where it was as valued as gold. Ebony was
specifically floated down the Nile for the pharaoh. King Tut's
tomb yielded numerous treasures made from the wood
Egyptians called "hebni", including the sliding draw bolts that
locked the doors for 2500 years. Reigning monarchs of India
also used ebony scepters to wave over their subjects. Royal
households often used ebony drinking cups believing the wood
was an antidote to poisons. Varieties of ebony come from
Nigeria, Cameroon, Ghana, Kribi, Gabon, Zaire, and
Madagascar. The wood used for this collection is the Gabon
variety which is the purest black and very rare. These
evergreen trees form almost pure groups near riverbanks.
Although most today are shrubs, ones that are over 100 years
old are typically 50-60 ft tall with 2 ft-wide trunks.
