The richly grained tropical hardwood Bocote (Cordia gerascanthus) is
known for its black, swirling grain atop a tobacco colored background. Its
natural oils allow it to be polished to a high translucence, providing the
wood with gloss and depth. Bocote is a particularly fine, beautiful wood,
with colors varying from light to golden brown and variegated irregular
markings. It is also known as Canalete, Cupane, Laurel, and Mexican
Rosewood. Bocote is very scarce and classified as rare within its natural
habitat of Costa Rica. It also can be found throughout Mexico, Guatemala,
Honduras, Nicaragua, Colombia, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Haiti and
Jamaica. It is a large canopy tree, with some specimens in the natural
rainforest reaching up to 120 feet tall and 3 feet in diameter, with a
straight cylindrical bole above a narrow buttress. In the tropical dry areas
of Mexico, bocote has been reported to grow up to a towering elevation
of 1600 feet. The wood is noted to be a very heavy hardwood, resists
marring and denting, and is very resistant to decay. The wood has a faint,
yet pleasant, fragrance when freshly cut.
