The family of acacia trees has a history as far back
as ancient Egypt when the trees were associated with
stories of the Egyptian gods.
Black acacia (Acacia
melanoxylon
) was introduced to the Santa Cruz and San
Francisco Bay region from eastern Australia and
Tasmania where it is still more commonly found. In
these areas, it occurs as an understory tree in wet
eucalypt forests, and as a dominant tree in
blackwood/tea tree swamps in northwest Tasmania. It is
best adapted to cooler moist sites. Known to some as
Tasmanian Blackwood, the trees can reach a moderate
45 ft or 90 ft in cold, deep gullies, usually with a single
trunk. Flowering bunches of round heads colored in
yellow-cream adorn the simple oblong, evergreen,
leathery leaves that make up a dense crown. Following
natural forest fires, black acacia reproduces prolifically
to decorate a barren landscape for the next 15-50 years.
