Writing Instruments & Wine Bottle Stoppers

African Wenge
On their own, these Wenge writing instruments are stunningly beautiful, but as a set, they are classically
elegant. Trimmed in 24 kt gold with a distinctive upper and lower barrel, the twist-operated ball point pen
is fitted with a Cross style refill and the click pencil uses 0.7mm lead.
Wenge (Milettia laurentii), also known as dikela, bokonge, and nson-so, is found in regions of Africa,
including Zaire, Gabon, Cameroon and the Congo. It is a dense and heavy wood that African craftsman
carve, not with chisels but with fire, while wetting those parts of the wood they want to keep. They then
sand the charred area to reveal the beautiful wood underneath. This process is carried out on fallen trees,
allowing healthy ones to continue growing. Typical carvings include ceremonial masks and sculptures of
their gods. It is said that wenge wood has mystical properties.
The tree grows to 60 ft tall with a 3 ft diameter. The wood is creamy beige when first cut, but in time, it
turns to a dark brown with black veining. Wenge is used quite little in the US because of the cost
associated with gathering the wood and the limited supply.

Pioneers used extracts from the bark of the Red Maple (Acer rubrum) to make ink. A strong breeze will display the subtly bi-colored foliage of this tree which has
dull green leaves with a light green to silvery underside. The 40-60 ft shade tree has an irregular rounded crown that turns brilliant shades of yellow, orange, and red
during the fall. These beautiful displays in the Eastern United States eventually turn into spindly sticks in the winter, but in late March, long before new foliage
emerges, globular clusters of showy red flowers decorate the trees.

Ebony (Doispyros crassiflora) is the prized wood of ancient Egypt, where it was as valued as gold. Ebony was specifically floated down the Nile for the pharaoh. King
Tut's tomb yielded numerous treasures made from the wood Egyptians called "hebni", including the sliding draw bolts that locked the doors for 2500 years.
Reigning monarchs of India also used ebony scepters to wave over their subjects. Royal households often used ebony drinking cups believing the wood was an
antidote to poisons. Varieties of ebony come from Nigeria, Cameroon, Ghana, Kribi, Gabon, Zaire, and Madagascar. The wood used for this collection is the
Gabon variety which is the purest black and very rare. These evergreen trees form almost pure groups near riverbanks. Although most today are shrubs, ones
that are over 100 years old are typically 50-60 ft tall with 2 ft-wide trunks.
