Titanium: Our black and gold titanium plated trims are extremely durable as titanium is a light, strong, lustrous, corrosion-resistant
metal. It is as strong as steel but only 60% of its weight, making titanium known for its high strength-to-weight ratio. Although titanium is
found on Earth, it is also found in meteorites and has been detected in the sun and in stars. It is used to make aircraft, spacecraft, naval
ships, and even human joint replacement implants. In its pure form, titanium is a white-silvery color, but it can be combined with other
compounds to alter its color. Our gold titanium looks exactly like 24 kt gold, while black titanium's color seems to change in the light
from silver to gunmetal gray to nearly black.

Gold: Our plated 10 kt and 24 kt gold plated trims have clear epoxy coatings to increase wear and durability.  Pure gold is a soft,
malleable, dense metal that is often combined with other metals such as hard nickel to increase its durability.  When combined with
other metals to form alloys, the purity of gold is expressed in units called karats (kt). One karat is equivalent to 1/24 part of pure gold in
an alloy; therefore, 24 kt is pure gold. In early 2006, the price of pure gold was $560/oz.

As with any substance, wear is inevitable and varies with how rough you are with your pen, the environment, and even the oils from
your own hands. Unfortunately, there is no way to quantify durability in terms of years. We use the highest quality parts we can, but not
every style is available in titanium and platinum, which tend to be the most durable. Don't worry, though; metal trims are replaceable at
a reasonable price, so you will be able to keep your pen in tip-top shape for a lifetime. Save even more with our
Protection Plan.

Platinum: The platinum trim used on our wooden pens is
plated in
rhodium, and our fountain pen nibs are tipped in
iridium
. Both of these metals are members of the platinum
group of metals. The platinum metals are a group of 6
chemical elements within the periodic table, all with similar
properties. The group members include ruthenium, rhodium,
palladium, osmium, iridium, and platinum and tend to occur
together in the same mineral deposits. The platinum metals
are all well-known for their wear and tarnish resistance
characteristics. Iridium is notable for being the most
corrosion resistant element known. Rhodium is a rare,
silvery-white metal that is very hard and resistant to
scratches. It averaged $1000 per troy ounce over the last 30
years, with a high of $7000/oz. in 1980. Records from 2005
place the price of rhodium at $2900/oz.
