The Elm tree is one of the most recognizable trees both lining our streets and naming them. They have
been around for 40 million years and as such, have made their way into our mythology.

Elms are classified in the genus Ulmus, and there are between 20-45 species as a result of easy
hybridization. Common in temperate regions of the Northern Hemisphere, they grow to an average height of
60-100 ft and can live for 275 years. Herbie, planted in 1775, located in Yermouth, ME, is thought to be the
oldest living Elm in the Northeast. Elm trees have numerous spreading branches and small flowers that form
purplish-brown tufts. Extremely water-resistant, the wood was used as waterpipes before the common
employment of cast iron.
The most famous Elm was the American Liberty Elm which was names after the "Liberty Tree", our
country's first symbol of freedom. On August 14, 1765 Boston colonists protested the hated Stamp Tax by
hanging 2 figures in effigy from the tree, and it was then named the Liberty Tree. Ten years later, British
soldiers evacuated Boston, and in a last act of violence, they cut the tree down because of its name.
The unique figuring of these wooden pens is the result of burls, which are created from unformed buds. The
tree produces cells which have all the genetic material to become branches and even whole trees, but for
some reason they do not. The extensive growth of these cells is similar to a mammalian tumor, although they
do no harm to the tree.
