The Due Collection of wooden pens is remarkably unique. Spalted wood forms delicate patterns resembling an
artist's sketches. This wooden pen and pencil make a complimentary pair while each is obviously irreproducible.
Ebony (Doispyros crassiflora) is the prized wood of ancient Egypt, where it was as valued as gold. Ebony was specifically
floated down the Nile for the pharaoh. King Tut's tomb yielded numerous treasures made from the wood Egyptians
called "hebni", including the sliding draw bolts that locked the doors for 2500 years. Reigning monarchs of India also used
ebony scepters to wave over their subjects. Royal households often used ebony drinking cups believing the wood was an
antidote to poisons. Varieties of ebony come from Nigeria, Cameroon, Ghana, Kribi, Gabon, Zaire, and Madagascar. The
wood used for this collection is the Gabon variety which is the purest black and very rare. These evergreen trees form
almost pure groups near riverbanks. Although most today are shrubs, ones that are over 100 years old are typically
50-60 ft tall with 2 ft-wide trunks.
Spalting is the result of a fungus that grows in a living tree. This will eventually kill the tree, but if it is cut down
before this happens, the fungus stains the wood in ink line-like patterns. The coloration is due to chemically-induced
reactions between the wood, the fungi and insect deposits often resulting in black, pink, grey, and multicolored streaked
wood.
Tamarind (Tamarindus indica) is a large, beautiful evergreen tree that can grow up to 75 ft tall. It is native to Asia and
Africa but is now widely grown in the tropics. The heartwood is dark red, and the sapwood is yellow-white. The dense,
spreading crown is decorated with yellow, red and purple flowers and brown, woody pods that hang like ornaments. The
pod contains the tree's fruit and has been an article of commerce since medieval times. Tamarind fruit is widely used as a
spice, in Indian chutneys and curries, as a Mexican candy, as a popular drink and popsicle in Southeast Asia, and as a
flavoring in Florida for guava jellies. It is also used for medicinal purposes such as a Philippine herbal tea that reduces
malaria fever and as an ingredient in cardiac and blood sugar reducing medicines.
