      The site of an eagle soaring high above the mountain tops is enough to make anyone pause. The wide, graceful turns
navigated by grand wings are reflected in the Curva Collection of wooden pens. These one-of-a-kind, handmade wooden
pens are decorated with gently curved platinum clips and detailed center bands set against a fantastically unique wood.
      Rippled eucalyptus (Eucalyptus obliqua) is caramel brown with waves of silver grain that give the wood the feel of
softly curled hair. The bark of the tree, however, is gray, fissured and fibrous, giving this species the common name
Messmate Stringybark. Glossy evergreen leaves with sharply pointed ends meander upward to form a spreading crown on
top of the 300 ft tree. The trees are jeweled with wineglass-shaped fruits and inconspicuous, white flowers, making them
the tallest flowering plant.
      In 1777, on James Cook's third expedition to Australia, a specimen of Eucalyptus obliqua was collected and officially
named by a botanist. This is the species from which the entire genus derives its name. There are now over 800 species of
eucalypts, which are predominant in New South Wales, Queensland, Victoria, Tasmania, and South Australia. Australia's Blue
Mountains get their characteristic distant blue haze when vaporized eucalyptus oil rises above the bush on warm days.
     Eucalypts have adapted to nearly every environment and can be found in wet mountain forests, bogs, woodlands,
blistering sun, and dappled shade. It is believed that eucalypts have evolved from rainforest precursors in response to
dramatic changes in the landscape, soil, and climate of the continent 35-50 million years ago, not long after Australia-New
Guinea separated from Gondwana.
     This wood has truly stood the test of time, adapting to its environment and becoming stronger with each generation. Its
silver waves are a reminder of its endurance and longevity.
